TOMORROW: Hearing on the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General
(WASHINGTON) – On Wednesday, April 21, the Committee on Homeland Security, chaired by Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), will hold a virtual hearing with officials from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (DHS OIG). This hearing will give members an opportunity to examine the challenges facing the DHS OIG based on GAO’s preliminary findings and recommendations in its review of the office – and also assess the performance of the OIG. Congress and the public depend on inspectors general to provide independent oversight and enhance accountability, but there have unfortunately been longstanding problems that have prevented the current DHS OIG from effectively achieving its mission.
The hearing will also give members an opportunity to examine news reports published today that the current Inspector General blocked investigations into the Secret Service’s involvement in the teargassing of peaceful protestors in Lafayette Square last year and also its handling of COVID-19. Another investigation published today reveals similar allegations.
